Leadership Development

We used to think about leadership as a set of static best practices and skills that could be mastered and implemented.  Many leaders and leadership consultants, however, are now talking about a condition that Peter Vaill first identified nearly twenty years ago:  “permanent white water.”  Even as the rapids of the economic crisis have been navigated, so many challenges remain: intensifying global competition, scarce resources, skyrocketing energy costs, rapid technological evolution, climate change, complex partnerships and political instability, to name just a few.

Employees, stakeholders and shareholders cry for direction in a world where the way forward is neither obvious nor simple.  Leaders in the new world must embrace a leadership style that is both adaptive and experimental.  Adaptive leadership reaches for “next practices” even as today’s best practices are cultivated.  Experimental leadership relies on encouraging and learning from the collective intelligence of the organization, not just the senior team.  It means engaging the diversity of the organization and running experiments in search of solutions.
